Filming for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! had to be halted when a relentless storm saw the celebrities having to evacuate the jungle camp.

As the severe thunderstorm took hold, the group were forced to evacuate into the Bush Telegraph for hours.

The chaos meant that filming for Monday night’s show was delayed by three hours as the celebrities sheltered from the brutal weather.

Heavy rain, thunder and lightening flooded the small camp in Australia at 2pm local time, which was 4am UK time.

A show source told the Daily Mail: “Our health and safety weather contingencies kicked in and we evacuated the celebrities immediately to the Bush Telegraph until the storm passed and it was safe to return to camp.”

The storm is understood to have lasted for about an hour, with the famous faces later leaving the small shack and spending the rest of the day attempting to dry their bedding and towels by the campfire.

The camp has a canopy above to protect the campmates from rain, but the powerful storm meant the group had to take shelter in a sealed area.

The Queensland Bureau of Meteorology had issued a warning about the storm ahead of its arrival, describing it as “very dangerous,” The Mirror reports.

It said the thunderstorm cause “large to giant hailstones, damaging and destructive winds and heavy rainfall causing flash flooding.”

Camp is now believed to have re-opened ahead of tonight’s episode.

The rain has been a problematic theme over the last couple of days, with host Ant McPartlin having slipped while presenting Saturday’s show.

However, last year’s series was the wettest year in the show’s 24-year history.

A source shared: “The jungle camp cannot cope with this level of rain and the thing is, when it rains like this, it’s not fun for anyone involved.”

Speaking to MailOnline, they added: “In fact, it’s miserable. It dampens the mood and ultimately ruins the show.”

It is understood the evacuation is done only in extreme circumstances and happened last year during the bad bout of weather.

An insider told The Mirror: “The Bush Telegraph is tiny but the only place where the campmates can be evacuated too.

“With all twelve contestants in there, it would have been very, very uncomfortable.

“Plus they were all drenched. It couldn’t have got any worse.”

They added: “It’s going to be very grim indeed. The wet weather always brings out the leeches, plus a whole host of other biting insects too.

“After what has seemed quite a harmonious camp, we expect it to get a little fraught from now on.”
