Police officers on patrol rescued the man after his tent went up in flames

A homeless man was rescued from his tent after it was set on fire in Manchester city centre.

The 53-year-old man was rescued by officers who noticed he was inside as they were patrolling Corporation Street around midnight.

They said he suffered no visible injuries but his belongings were destroyed by the fire which “engulfed” his tent.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remains in custody for questioning.

Regarding the victim, a Greater Manchester Police representative said: “Officers have taken all appropriate safeguarding measures, liaising with social services to provide ongoing support.”
