Princess Kate and Jessie J shared an emotional hug at the Royal Variety Performance on Wednesday evening.

Both have faced cancer diagnoses within the past year, creating an immediate bond between the 43-year-old Princess of Wales and the 37-year-old singer.

Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, approached Kate backstage, placing her hand on the princess’s shoulder.

She declared: “I just had breast cancer. I just want to give you a hug, cancer really puts life into perspective.”

Their encounter represented Kate’s first appearance at the Royal Variety Performance since completing her cancer treatment, marking a significant milestone in her gradual return to public duties.

The meeting occurred after performances concluded, when Prince William and Kate spent nearly 40 minutes greeting entertainers who had participated in the evening’s programme.

The Princess of Wales revealed her cancer remission in January following treatment for an undisclosed form of the disease, whilst Ms Cornish underwent a mastectomy in June as part of her breast cancer treatment.

The singer’s diagnosis came early, allowing doctors to avoid chemotherapy or radiotherapy, though the tumour’s size necessitated a full mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy.

Ms Cornish has spoken candidly about the emotional toll, describing breaking down while looking at her surgical scars and requiring her mother’s help with post-operative care.

The pop star faces additional surgery to address symmetry between her implant and natural breast, with her two-year-old son Sky providing crucial emotional support throughout her treatment.

Kate has previously described cancer diagnosis as “life changing” and the recovery process as a “rollercoaster”, emphasising the importance of addressing mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

This departure from standard royal etiquette led to a heartfelt embrace between the two women, who then discussed the profound shock that accompanies a cancer diagnosis.

The singer had deliberately chosen casual attire for her performance, wearing a black hoodie and joggers to represent those struggling with depression at home.

“They don’t want to get up in the morning, put on a fancy dress or wear make-up. They’re just wearing they’re comfies on the sofa,” Ms Cornish explained afterwards.

The singer performed her new composition “I’ll Never Know Why”, a tribute to her late bodyguard Dave, who died by suicide in 2021, which Kate described as “such a moving song.”

Ms Cornish responded: “It is such an important conversation. I just miss him, and I want to help others.”

The Prince of Wales subsequently approached the pop star about potential collaboration on mental health awareness initiatives, with the singer revealing: “He would love to get me involved. They are interested and know how important it is to share the message.”

The prince’s invitation aligns with the Royal Variety Charity’s recent establishment of a dedicated mental health support team for entertainment industry professionals.

The evening marked Kate’s sixth attendance at the Royal Variety Performance alongside Prince William, representing a significant step in her measured return to royal engagements.

The princess wore an emerald velvet gown from German designer Talbot Runhof, complemented by the Greville chandelier earrings previously worn by Queen Elizabeth II and created by Cartier over 11 years.

The annual charity event, hosted by Jason Manford, featured performances from Paddington The Musical and a 40th anniversary celebration of Les Misérables.

The Prince of Wales shared a lighthearted moment with Paddington Bear, commenting on the character’s marmalade sandwich and praising his singing abilities.

The prince also revealed to Stephen Fry that his entire family had watched the actor’s recent BBC series Celebrity Traitors, whilst Kate met performing dog Hurricane on its final show appearance.
