A woman has died have being stabbed in the neck in an “unprovoked attack” in Birmingham, police have said.

The 34-year-old was taken to hospital with a serious injury after the attack on Smallbrook Queensway, close to the Bullring Shopping Centre, shortly before 9pm on Friday.

West Midlands Police confirmed she has since died in hospital.

Djeison Rafael, 21, who was charged with attempted murder, is expected to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court this morning.

Police said an application will be made to amend the charges to reflect the victim’s death.

The force earlier said Rafael, a black British national, had also been charged with two further assaults and possession of a blade.

In a statement this morning, West Midlands Police said: “Extra officers will be around Birmingham city centre to offer reassurance as we understand this is a worrying incident.

“We are still keen to hear from anyone who knows more about what happened or the movements of Rafael, who we believe was wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and rucksack on Friday evening (November 7).”

Detective Inspector James Nix said it was believed to be an “unprovoked attack” and officers were working to “understand why it happened”.

Following the stabbing, Birmingham-born Shabana Mahmood, who serves as MP for the Ladywood area of the city, said she was “shocked” to hear the news.

She wrote to X: “My thoughts are with the victim, her family and friends.

“I thank the police for their swift action to arrest a suspect.

“I urge any witnesses to contact West Midlands Police.”
