Locals in the Merseyside town of Kirkby have shared their disbelief as the name of their town was misspelt four times in markings on a major road passing.

Plans are now underway to correct the embarrassing errors found along the M58 junction, where the relatively simple town name was misspelt as “Kirby”.

The mispelling could be seen multiple times, emblazoned in bold white text.

National Highways and Sefton Council’s blunder prompted an outpouring of reaction on social media, with residents taking to local Facebook groups to share their feelings.

“I moved from Kirkby 55 years ago, but it still pi***s me off when people spell it without the K,” Robert Howard fumed.

Rose Glover Tope slammed that it was: “Embarrassing when the council can’t even get the name right”.

“Kirkby (the town the) council forgot; they can’t be bothered spelling it correctly,” Shaun Boland despaired.

Ash Hair added: “They obviously can’t spell. Deffo not Scousers who’ve done this; you can tell.”

Not all were furious with the errors, as Alan Newhall penned: “That’s no big deal dropping the letter K.

“Take a drive up the A55 and see how their council has spelt the town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch,” he quipped.

Also finding the amusing side, William Cuddy joked: “Scruffy knowsley council saving money on a K!”

To make matters worse, the relatively simple name was again misspelt on official signage leading into the town.

Adding insult to injury, two of the incorrect signs could be found between School Lane and Wango Lane in Aintree, just a short distance from one featuring the correct spelling.

Kim Bradshaw, a motorist who first raised the issue, said: “I think that’s a joke, really.”

“I think it’s disgraceful. It’s mistakes that should not be made and should be changed, effective immediately.

“It just doesn’t look really good in our city that people are living here and working here, and we get these signs that aren’t even spelt right,” she explained.

“It’s absolutely comical. I would love to know what the people of Kirkby think,” Ms Bradshaw told the Liverpool Echo.

Following the local backlash, it is now understood that plans are underway to correct the errors.
