Meghan Markle’s latest tutorial triggered an online backlash as users rushed to point out a blunder in the video.

Some social media users ridiculed the Duchess of Sussex following an Instagram video showcasing a beverage made with plain water and her lifestyle brand’s spice blend.

The 44-year-old demonstrated preparing what she described as a “really cosy warm beverage that everyone can enjoy” using As Ever’s Spiced Cider Mulling Spice Kit.

Critics swiftly pointed out that the recipe essentially amounted to flavoured water rather than traditional mulled drinks.

One commenter wrote: “If I’m not mistaken, Meghan Markle just made mulled water? Wouldn’t you add the spices to apple cider? Or wine? Not WATER?”

Others compared the concoction to “air freshener in mugs” and home fragrance techniques.

In the video demonstration, Meghan explained her method of bringing a large pot of water to the boil before removing it from heat and steeping the spice kit.

She then ladles the mixture into glasses and garnishes with cinnamon sticks, lemon and a teaspoon of As Ever’s twenty-eight-dollar honey to “embolden the flavours”.

The Duchess suggested that home cooks could “add a spirit of choice to make it a little bit more grown up” but maintained that the beverage is “the most soothing” without alcohol, “especially in the cold weather”.

Her approach diverged from conventional mulling practices, which typically involve adding spices to cider or wine rather than water alone.

Online commentators expressed bewilderment at the recipe, with one user wrote: “Looks like she was making a spicy tea because she has no idea of what she is really doing. Madame Fake-It-Till-You-Make-It-Montecito.”

Further criticism highlighted that mulling spices are traditionally used to enhance existing beverages rather than create them from scratch. “She creates a simmer pot and then serves it to guests as a beverage.”

The spice kit forms part of As Ever’s recently launched collection, which includes both hot toddy and mulled cider blends.

The spice kit forms part of As Ever’s recently launched collection, which includes both hot toddy and mulled cider blends.

Each forty-three-gram bag provides eight servings and features organic ingredients such as cinnamon, lemongrass, lemon peel and ginger root.

As Ever’s website describes the product as a “holiday entertaining essential” with an aroma designed to “inspire conversation”.

The brand suggests slowly simmering the blend on the stove to fill kitchens with its fragrance, creating an atmosphere for gathering guests.

The product listing includes Meghan’s personal serving suggestions, with the Duchess recommending enjoying the beverage “in good company with the ones you love, one mug at a time”.
