Charlotte Griffiths has said she was “shocked” by King Charles’s decision to deliver a “double blow” to Andrew, stripping him of both his titles and his home.

Speaking to GB News, the Mail on Sunday’s editor-at-large said she “didn’t think they’d do both at the same time”, admitting she expected Andrew to lose his Royal Lodge residence but not his title.

“I thought the Royal Lodge thing would eventually happen because there’s been so much pressure week after week,” she said.

“But to then take away the Prince title too, I wasn’t expecting that, certainly not a double blow in one go.

“I think what’s happened is this has gone on now for week after week after week, if not year after year. But the lock on every day is another headline.

“He had to be so utterly decisive and to really draw a line.

“Otherwise, I can see headlines continuing for another three or four weeks or months. So I think he tried to do everything he could in one fell swoop.”

She added: “I was thinking about it today, I don’t think there are any working members of the Royal Family under 60, other than the Wales family.

“I really think the next chapter for the monarchy will be the Wales family and basically nothing else.

“They’ve got three children, and when they grow up, there’ll be enough working Royals among the four of them.”

Andrew has faced controversy in recent years due to his links to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

It is understood that although Andrew denies the accusations, Buckingham Palace considers that there have been “serious lapses of judgment”.

In a statement, the Palace said: “Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

“His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence.

“Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation.

“These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”

The statement added: “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
