Drivers have been warned to expect delays this morning after an HGV overturned on a major motorway and caused a serious traffic build-up.

The incident has now resulted in the complete closure of the M25 anti-clockwise between J10 (Cobham) and J9 (Leatherhead).

National Highways confirmed the closure at approximately 11am this morning, roughly half an hour after initially stopping vehicles due to the accident.

The lorry remains on its side across the carriageway, preventing any passage through this crucial section of London’s orbital motorway during the busy Thursday morning period.

Emergency responders are currently on the scene, with Surrey Ambulance Service personnel attending alongside National Highways Traffic Officers who are managing the flow of vehicles.

Significant congestion has developed in the approach to the incident, with queues extending back from junction 10 as morning commuters encounter the unexpected blockage.

National Highways has now put an official diversion in place, with drivers urged to follow the Hollow Square symbol displayed on road signage.

The alternative route directs drivers to exit at junction 10’s Wisley Interchange, taking the A3 northbound towards London before joining the A240 at Tolworth Interchange.

The diversion continues through Ewell and Burg Heath, eventually reconnecting with the M25 at junction 8 near Reigate Hill via the A217.

National Highways has cautioned that substantial delays are expected throughout the morning, urging drivers to consider alternative routes or postpone non-essential journeys.

The agency has predicted that normal traffic conditions will return between 6:15pm and 6:30pm later today.

The M25 is one of the busiest roads in the UK, with hundreds of thousands of users travelling on it every day.

The RAC shared: “When joining the M25 you may want to be mindful of the below accident blackspots. Plan your journey with the RAC Route Planner and keep up to date with any major M25 traffic updates.”
