A Jewish day centre opposite the Manchester synagogue where two worshippers died in a knife attack has been locked down by police after reports of a “suspicious substance” found in an envelope.

The Nicky, a day centre for Jewish adults, on Middleton Road, has been cordoned off, amid a heavy police presence, with two ambulances also on the scene, along with security officers from the Jewish community.

The building is directly opposite the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, where a terror attack was carried out on October 2.

The day centre has been evacuated “as a precaution” and everyone who was in the building “appears safe and well”, according to a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson.

The force has also confirmed there is no wider risk to the public.

In full, the GMP statement said: “We’ve evacuated an address on Middleton Road as a precaution after a suspicious substance was found in an envelope.

“All occupants appear safe and well at this time, and we’re working with emergency services to ensure everyone’s safety.

“You will see emergency services in the area and we know the concern this may cause after the events at the nearby Heaton Park synagogue earlier this month.

The Nicky’s website describes it as a Jewish social club for adults of all ages and abilities.

The aforementioned terror attack resulted in the deaths of two people while three more were taken to hospital.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, drove a car at members of the public before setting about stabbing people outside the synagogue on October 2.

Adrian Daulby, 35, and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz were killed.

Police later revealed Mr Daulby was hit by police gunfire as officers set about stopping the attacker.
