A murder investigation has been launched after a pensioner died following an assault in a hospital in London.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith on September 18 after reports of one patient assaulting another.

Authorities named 85-year-old Andrew Farmer as the victim, adding he had sustained serious injuries.

The pensioner from Ealing died a week later on September 25.

The force added that a 70-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

METROPOLITAN POLICE

On Wednesday, the police released a statement which said that Anatoliy Podmazko, of no fixed address, was charged with grievous bodily harm on September 20.

He is set to appear in Isleworth Crown Court in west London on October 17.

Leading the murder investigation Detective Inspector Kirsten Hadleigh said: “Our thoughts remain with Andrew’s family and friends at this undoubtedly difficult time.

“We remain in close contact with Andrew’s loved ones and are keeping them up to date with the progress of our investigation.”

Andrew’s partner Paul Wrigley said in a statement released by the police: “My partner through thick and thin for 60 years. Now sadly missed.
