The new security fence at Forest Lodge will not block Prince William and Princess Kate’s views, thanks to a special feature already in place at the estate.

The property includes a ha-ha wall, a sunken boundary designed in the 18th century to secure gardens and parks without interrupting the landscape.

The National Trust describes it as “a type of sunken fence… to give the viewer of the garden the illusion of an unbroken, continuous rolling lawn, whilst providing boundaries for grazing livestock.”

The name is thought to come from the surprise of encountering the hidden drop, with some suggesting people would exclaim “Ha ha” if they stumbled across it.

While it is not known if the family plans to keep animals beyond their dogs, the wall will not interfere with outdoor play for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The estate itself is surrounded by open countryside, ensuring uninterrupted views across the grounds.

It was confirmed in August that the Wales family would relocate from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge before the end of the year.

A source told Hello!: “Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.

“They are looking forward to creating many happy family memories in their new home.”

The couple first moved into Adelaide Cottage in Windsor in the summer of 2022, shortly before the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

At the time, it was believed they wanted to be closer to the late monarch at Windsor Castle. Since then, Princess Kate has faced her cancer diagnosis, adding further strain on the family.

Forest Lodge offers more space than their previous home, as well as leisure facilities. The grounds include a tennis court, a sport Kate is known to enjoy, and one her children are also keen on.

The move to Forest Lodge also places the Wales family close to Windsor Great Park, with miles of open space on their doorstep.

The estate has long been associated with the Crown Estate and sits within private grounds.

Kate and William’s new residence has undergone renovations before the family’s arrival.

Security around the property has been overseen by royal protection officers in coordination with local authorities.
