A local carnival is at risk of being cancelled as travellers return to an English town for the third time.

Travellers descended on Stowmarket Recreational Ground, off Finborough Road, on Friday afternoon.

The town council has been made aware of the illegal encampment.

A spokesman for the council said: “We are working closely with the police, the travellers, and all relevant agencies to manage the situation appropriately.”

The council is continuing to monitor the situation and provide updates when available.

The community is set to hold its carnival at the recreation ground from July 18 to July 20.

The park, referred to as the Rec amongst the local community, is a popular public park surrounded by trees, close to the centre of town.

In recent years, the Rec has undergone various improvements, including the installation of a new play area, skatepark, ballpark and a CCTV camera.

The illegal encampment has sparked concerns over the new investment.

It is the third time that the much-loved community space has been used illegally by travellers.

GB News has approached Suffolk Police for comment.
