Two elderly women have died after a BMW being chased by police smashed into their care home.

Northumbria Police has today confirmed the pensioners, one aged in her 90s and one in her 80s, have died following the crash on Wednesday, July 9.

The blue BMW was being chased by officers on the A1231 eastbound in Sunderland when it collided with Highcliffe Care Home on Whitchurch Road in Witherwack at around 9.40pm.

Eight other residents were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening and all but one have now been discharged.

Police earlier confirmed two men had been arrested in connection to the crash.

A 21-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of dangerous driving and theft of a motor vehicle.

A second man, also aged 21, was arrested the following day on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

In a statement on Thursday, July 10, Northumbria Police said both men remained in custody and a full investigation is ongoing.
