National Highways A lorry has crashed partially through a motorway central reservation barrier. There are metal barrels and debris all over the opposite carriageway. Another lorry has also crashed into the barrier on that side of the motorway.National Highways

Police called to the scene found a huge amount of debris and several crashed vehicles

Part of the M60 has been closed in both directions after an eight-vehicle pile-up, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were initially called to reports of a crash involving three lorries, two cars and a van at about 11:30 BST.

National Highways said the M60 would remain closed for a “substantial amount of time” because of the amount of damage to motorway infrastructure and vehicles, as well as debris and spillage on the carriageways.

Motorists attempting to travel between junction 25 for the Bredbury Interchange and junction 1 for the Pyramid Roundabout in Stockport are being urged to use signposted diversions.

National Highways A blue-and-red Scania lorry with damage to its front has come to rest lying across all three lanes of a motorway. The road is covered in liquid and debris. National Highways

Debris, fuel and barrels of beer have spilled over the M60

Motorists have been warned to expect delays of an hour in both directions.

National Highways said one lorry had driven through the central reservation and hit several lamp posts, while another had shed its load of beer barrels.

The North West Ambulance Service said three people had been taken to hospital for further treatment, while six others were assessed for minor injuries.
