Eamonn Holmes was unable to fight back the tears during the latest episode of his podcast, Things We Like with Eamonn & Paul.

Alongside fellow GB News fan-favourite, Paul Coyte, Eamonn and his co-star regularly speak to famous guests – and each other – about all things they like.

On Friday, a new instalment of the podcast arrived and this time, Eamonn and Paul delved into their love of films and old-school video shops.

In doing so, things took an emotional turn when Eamonn reflected on one film from his past that clearly struck a chord with him due to its tear-jerking storyline.

The film in question was the 1995 blockbuster, The American President. The movie’s cast boasts the likes of Michael Douglas, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Shawna Waldron, and Michael J Fox among other big names.

Reminiscing about how the film tapped into Eamonn’s sentimental nature, the GB News star told listeners: “When I think back at films that really made a difference and really just were super, there was a film in the ’90s called The American President.

“It was Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. It’s a beautiful love story and if you haven’t seen it folks, I really would recommend this to you, The American President.”

Delving into the storyline, Eamonn continued: “Basically, he’s the president, his wife dies, and it’s very tragic. But anyway, six months later or so, he starts dating a woman who works for him, and it’s a scandal! A total scandal.

“But he’s running for re-election… I forget who the actor was, who he was up against in it. But anyway, he kept saying, ‘My name is Paul Coyte and I’m standing for president’, and he would do this, this was his punchline all the time.

“Anyway, Michael Douglas gives this speech,” Eamonn said before a lump in his throat could be heard. “He’s pushed to the brink, he’s criticised for dating this woman and whatever.”

Eventually, the emotions took over. “Oh gosh, it makes me cry even thinking about it. But he gives this…”

“I’ve seen it but I don’t remember any of this,” Paul chipped in, clearly not as impacted by the movie as Eamonn was.

“Oh, it’s the most beautiful speech,” Eamonn replied. “If I could give one speech in my life, it would be like that.

“Basically, he talks about, you know, ‘I have been president of this country, I have been proud to serve this country and I’ve made one mistake’, and he talks about how he loved… he loved two – oh, it’s very sad.”

At this point, Eamonn began to cry, prompting a sympathetic Paul to interject: “Awh, Eamonn, no.”

Regaining his composure, Eamonn soldiered on: “Anyways, he’s loved two women in his life and one died but his punchline is, ‘My name is Andrew Shepherd and I am the president’.

“And you want to stand up and cheer at that. But I find it the most uplifting, beautiful love story of a film. It’s lovely.”

“Oh, listen to you. That’s so sweet,” Paul chimed in as a tearful Eamonn admitted: “I’m a sucker for sentimentality, I really am.”

The pair then proceeded to discuss who their favourite interviewees have been throughout their careers.

And it’s safe to say Eamonn won’t be rushing to speak to actress Meg Ryan again any time soon.

“The worst person (who) made it quite clear she didn’t want to talk about the film, especially to me, was Meg Ryan,” Eamonn said later in the episode.

“I had to live for ages that I said Meg Ryan was horrible and people go, ‘No, no, no, she’s not’.

“Until she was interviewed by Michael Parkinson on air and she wouldn’t answer any of his questions.

“He basically said, ‘Miss Ryan, what would you do with this interview now?’ And she said, ‘Wind it up.’ He said, ‘Exactly, good night,’ and he wound her up. I actually believe she’s got some sort of phobia about being interviewed.
