Tourists have been issued a travel warning for the Philippines as British nationals have reported rape and sexual assaults in the Southeast Asian destination.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provided essential information on how solo travellers can keep themselves safe.
Holidaymakers were told: “British nationals have reported rape and sexual assaults in some locations popular with backpackers, including Coron and Siargao.”
They were encouraged to read the FCDO’s information on “solo and independent travel”. This includes guidance on “how to plan and stay safe if you are travelling alone or independently”.

The FCDO stated: “All travel comes with risk. However, if you travel by yourself (solo travel), independent of a group or organised tour (independent travel), you can face additional challenges.”
Holidaymakers were given advice on planning their travels, staying safe while abroad – including tips for transportation and accommodation – and organisations that can help.
Providing specific information on sexual assault, the FCDO stated: “Rape and sexual assault is a risk to people of all genders worldwide. The local services and attitudes towards helping victims can vary widely by country.
“The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) takes any allegation of rape and sexual assault seriously. Read our advice on what to do if you have been raped or sexually assaulted abroad, which includes specific advice for the country or territory you’re in.”
The Philippines is known for its exceptional natural beauty, from the crystal-clear waters of Calauit Island to the extraordinary Ifugao Rice Terraces to the impressive Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
But before visiting the Southeast Asian destination, it’s important to consult the FCDO’s latest travel guidance for a safe, well-informed trip.
This includes the most up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, health and getting help.
There are some parts of the Philippines where the FCDO advises against travel, so it’s important to be aware of this before your trip.
Areas where the FCDO advises against travel
Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago
The FCDO advises against all travel to western and central Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago.
The FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to the remainder of Mindanao, except for:
- Camiguin Island
- Dinagat Island
- Siargao Island
Holidaymakers were told: “This advice is due to terrorist activity and clashes between the military and insurgent groups in South Philippines.”
