He rose to fame after successfully having all four judges turn their chairs on The Voice Australia in 2013.
And now Michael Paynter is stepping into uncharted territory.
The 38-year-old is taking on the monumental role of Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, a production that has captivated audiences worldwide for over five decades.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Michael opened up about his excitement, the challenges of musical theatre, and the honour of stepping into such an iconic role.
‘This is such an amazing legacy,’ Paynter said of the production.
‘It’s thrilling to be part of this new incarnation of the show, which has such a rich history in Australia and around the world. The musical legacy from its early days as a concept album in the ’70s is incredible.’

Despite being best known for his rock and roll roots, Paynter is bringing his own style to the role. ‘I don’t think I know how to do anything else,’ he admitted.
‘The producers and creative team have encouraged us to bring our authenticity to the story, and that’s been a real joy.’
For a musician used to playing in pubs and arenas, the transition to theatre has been a unique challenge.
‘Eight shows a week is a whole new world,’ Paynter confessed.
‘Usually, I’m in the corner of a pub with a guitar. Now, I’m in front of 2,000 people on a Tuesday night, with costume changes and choreography. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone, but I’m loving it.’
Michael credits the ensemble and creative team for making the experience special. ‘This is an extraordinary cast,’ he said.
‘The whole team is incredibly supportive. I’ve been blown away by the talent and commitment of everyone involved.’
Paynter believes the show’s timeless appeal lies in its music and universal themes. ‘It’s the story of humanity,’ he explained.

‘Whether you’re religious or not, these are stories that have shaped our society. And the music is just exceptional. It started as a concept album, so the songs are front and centre—they’re hooky, well-written, and unforgettable.’
The role of Jesus comes with its own challenges and rewards for the singer.
‘It’s a big role, and everyone in this show is giving it their all,’ he said.
‘But that’s why I’m here—to sing. The music is what drives me.’
Paynter shares the stage with powerhouse vocalist Mahalia Barnes, who plays Mary, and also happens to be one of his oldest friends.

Barnes echoed the sentiment, praising Paynter’s performance. ‘Michael brings so much heart to the role,’ she said.
‘His voice is incredible, but it’s his commitment to the story that makes it so special.’
With performances running through most of next year, Paynter is embracing the busy schedule.
‘We’ll be here through Christmas and New Year’s,’ he said. He also revealed that he’s taken a year off from performing in his other bands to focus on being the best Jesus he can be.
Jesus Christ Superstar is currently playing at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney.
