Jennifer Lopez’s upcoming Bob The Builder film has been blasted once again after being thrust back into the limelight, with social media users confused over why it has been named after the original series when the plot is so different.
The project, which will see In the Heights star Anthony Ramos take on the titular character, re-entered public consciousness on Monday after Deadline reported that Amazon MGM Studios had won the bidding war for the rights.
In the movie, Roberto (Ramos) aka Bob travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction job, and takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build.
Bob’s journey celebrates the vibrant and colorful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people.
The original Bob the Builder series was a British animated children’s television show created by Keith Chapman.

It ran from April 12, 1999 to December 31, 2011 in the United Kingdom through the CBBC strand and later CBeebies.
The program centers on the adventures and escapades of a general contractor named Bob who owns a team of anthropomorphized construction vehicles that go about their day helping out the residents of Bobsville.
They are also joined by work colleague Wendy, alongside their neighbors and friends.
Bob the Builder made famous the catchphrase: ‘Can we fix it? Yes, we can!’ – with the character even landing a UK Christmas number one single in 2000.
Social media users have been left stumped by JLo’s movie because it is so far from the original – with many also confused as to why creators are making a children’s film ‘so deep.’
Taking to the social media site X, one wrote: ‘That’s not Bob the Builder then?????’
Another said of the plot: ‘What does that even mean?’
‘Kinda cool how utterly nonsensical Hollywood is sometimes cuz like tf (the f***) do you mean Amazon is making a movie about Bob (named Roberto in this film) The Builder going on a journey to really discover what it means to… build,’ a third posted.

‘Hysterical stuff.’
A fourth continued: ‘I remember growing up watching Bob the Builder. The show was about building stuff with talking construction equipment, helping to teach children about how you can rely on your friends to help when you need it.
‘How tf did we get here?’
A fifth continued: ‘I genuinely just don’t understand this.’
‘This is a children’s cartoon there was no need for a origin story lol he’s Bob the Builder,’ a sixth said.
Others wrote: ‘Since when do kids movies need to be this deep?’
Another said: ‘Amazing how deep of a plot they are shooting for with the Bob the Builder lore.’
The animated feature was first announced in January when it was revealed that JLo’s production company Nuyorican Productions had joined forces with Anthony for the new film.
It was previously confirmed that JLo, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions will co-produce the project from Mattel Films.
Felipe Vargas will write the upcoming film, with the project overseen by Kevin McKeon, Ivan Sanchez and Arturo Thur De Koós for Mattel and Natalie Haack Flores for Nuyorican.
The movie found itself at the center of an unlikely culture war at the time of its announcement, with Frank Furedi, the emeritus professor of sociology at Kent University, blasting the move to turn Bob into a social justice warrior.
