An 85-year-old pensioner from East Sussex has been left “gobsmacked” after being barred from a solo midweek visit to Butlin’s Skegness resort.
Malcolm, a long-time Butlin’s patron, was shocked to learn that the popular holiday destination only allows single travellers on weekends.
The pensioner, hailing from Patcham, had hoped to enjoy a few nights at the resort during the week.
However, upon contacting Butlin’s, he was informed of their policy restricting solo visitors on weekdays.

“I was amazed when I was told this,” Malcolm told BBC Radio Sussex.
“I’ve been to Butlin’s before, even the Skegness one.”
Butlin’s defended their policy in a statement, saying: “We don’t allow single travellers on our family breaks unless they are linked to a booking where children are also on the break.”
The company added that “family breaks are the only ones that run midweek”.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
Malcolm attempted to negotiate, offering to pay a supplement, but was told this was not possible.
He also learned that if he booked for two people and the second person couldn’t attend, he would be refused entry.
“I asked if they can waive the rules for older solo travellers but I was told no,” Malcolm explained.
The pensioner was particularly upset as he and his family had been loyal Butlin’s customers for years.

He used to go with his wife and son, however, due to his wife’s ongoing seven-year battle with cancer, she was unable to accompany him.
Meanwhile, his son had exhausted his annual leave, leaving Malcolm to travel alone.
The cost difference between weekday and weekend visits was significant. A midweek stay would have cost Malcolm £75, while a weekend visit would set him back £300.
“I enjoy my trips to Butlin’s – the entertainment in the evening is good and a nice play to stay,” Malcolm shared.
Malcolm has now booked an alternative trip on his own.
