Chrissy Metz stated that her stepfather, Crayton Hodge, would ‘threaten to lock the cupboards’ as she opened up about experiencing ‘painful’ child abuse.
The This Is Us star, 44 – who previously detailed her upbringing in her 2018 memoir This Is Me: Loving The Person You Are Today – also talked about how her weight impacted the treatment she received over the years, per People.
During Tuesday’s episode of the Jamie Kern Lima podcast, Metz expressed that her stepfather ‘threaten to lock the cupboards, and I’m like, “I don’t think you get it.”
‘I think there’s so much more awareness now around food, food issues, food behavior… we educate people, the fear goes away. And maybe he was just fearful. I don’t really know.’
Chrissy then revealed, ‘But yeah, I mean, [it was] definitely mental, physical, emotional abuse for sure.’
Chrissy Metz, 44, stated that her stepfather, Crayton Hodge, would ‘threaten to lock the cupboards’ as she opened up about her ‘painful’ child abuse; seen in 2022 in L.A.
The actress further discussed the effect Hodge’s actions had on her, adding, ‘the emotional stuff…they’re like little nicks, little cuts, and eventually you bleed out. It is painful.’
‘Why does my weight equate my worthiness? And as a 12-year-old kid, it’s like, how do you reconcile that in your mind?’
Metz also opened up about her weight while growing up, and told the host, ‘You look like none of your other friends and you can’t fit into any of the cute Wet Seal clothes that they can fit into. You’re like, “Oh, let me borrow your necklace.”‘
‘Also all the boys liked my friends – and I always felt like I was setting my friends up with cute boys.’
Chrissy said that she is ‘trying to heal those wounds slowly but surely. And it’s not easy…The root of it is, “I’m unworthy.”‘
‘There’s so much stigma about weight, and there still is for a myriad of reasons, but I think there’s this idea that like, “Oh, you can’t put the food down” or “You’re lazy.”‘
‘Beautiful models are on a pedestal, even though they’re very unhealthy as well. They’re not taking care of their bodies. But when you’re overweight, it’s like a whole other thing. It’s so bizarre,’ the American Horror Story star added.
Metz – who appeared on The Masked Singer earlier this year – then recalled getting onto airplanes and people would ‘sigh, or wouldn’t look at me or wouldn’t engage.’
During Tuesday’s episode of the Jamie Kern Lima podcast , Metz expressed that her stepfather ‘would me in the kitchen or threaten to lock the cupboards, and I’m like, “I don’t think you get it”‘
‘I think there’s so much more awareness now around food, food issues, food behavior…we educate people, the fear goes away. And maybe he was just fearful. I don’t really know,’ she added; seen in 2022 in L.A.
‘Before the show, I could go on an airplane and someone could not want to sit next to me if they were too squished or they were going to be like, “Oh, gosh, here comes a big girl that I have to sit next to.”‘
However, after landing a role in This Is Us, Chrissy said the way people treated her changed.
‘But because now I’m on a TV show, they don’t care. Or they’re like, “Oh, well, you’re famous.”‘
Metz expressed, ‘It was always like, they’re going to be bothered that I’m sitting next to them, or they wouldn’t look at me twice or they would not engage.’
‘And then when I became, let’s put it in air quotes, famous, then they want to have a conversation or they were more apt to want to sit next to me.’
The actress told Lima, ‘It’s still something that my friends and I talk about because what does it really even mean? What could I provide to them or what insight could I share with them? I don’t know.’
‘Do they feel cooler sitting next to someone who’s famous? I don’t know. I don’t understand it,’ she said, before admitting, ‘That kind of behavior…it makes you not want to trust people.’
From 2016 through 2022, Metz notably portrayed the role of Kate Pearson in the hit NBC series, This Is Us.
Her performance earned her Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
The actress further discussed the effect of Hodge’s actions on her, adding, ‘the emotional stuff…they’re like little nicks, little cuts, and eventually you bleed out. It is painful’
She also won two SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
In the midst of the show’s run, Chrissy published the 2018 memoir This Is Me: Loving The Person You Are Today.
Metz was born to Denise and Mark Metz in Homestead, Florida, before the family, including two older siblings, Monica and Phillip, moved to Japan when the future actress was six months old for a Naval assignment.
She recalled in her memoir that she never ‘bonded’ with Mark – she doesn’t call her father ‘dad’ – and that she was hesitant to use his last name when she made it in Hollywood.
Chrissy claimed that that the only time he gave her a compliment was when she was seven years old during a fishing trip.
It was just months later that Mark and Metz’s mother’s relationship fell apart and the sailor was caught buying a necklace for another woman.
‘Mark is a stranger to me and I had absolutely no idea how to magically bridge the gulf between us,’ she wrote.
Mark disputed this version of events, telling DailyMail.com: ‘Did I abandon her? No! I didn’t abandon anybody. If she never contacts me, that’s her business.’
Chrissy’s mother eventually met Crayton Hodge, who would become the children’s stepfather – a man Metz now calls ‘Trigger.’

The actress claimed that she suffered years of abuse from Hodge and had to be weighed regularly when she was living with him.
In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, Hodge said last year that he ‘never put any pressure on [Metz] to eat differently or work out’.
Metz disagrees with this in her memoir, saying: ‘Whaaat? I just didn’t know what do do with that [claim]. He thinks that he said I could eat whatever I wanted, and yet he weighed me constantly? Wow. Okay.’
The actress also wrote about a front yard fist fight she had with her sister in front of the neighbors on Christmas Eve and how she used to wander grocery stores when she was eight years old because she didn’t want to be home alone.
And last year in October, Metz split from her boyfriend, Bradley Collins, after three years of dating
Chrissy additionally opened up about her first marriage to Martyn Eaden, whom she tied the knot with in 2008.
However, the pair’s divorce was finalized in 2015 after he filed for divorce one year earlier, citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’
