Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have remained pretty tight-lipped about their personal lives over the course of their romance that dates back to 2011.
But in a new interview with The Times the actress and mother of two opens up about the couple’s two daughters, their parenting style, and one of the household rules that wouldn’t go over well with many kids.
It turns out the celebrity duo doesn’t allow their children, who are home-schooled, to use smartphones or social media at their home.
Mendes and Gosling welcomed their first daughter, Esmeralda, now 10, in September 2014, and their second daughter, Amada, eight, in April 2016.
‘Putting my kid on the internet and being like, “Oh, search something,” that to me is equivalent to telling her, “Oh, just go down the street in the middle of the night. You’ll be fine,”‘ Mendes, 50, revealed.
‘I know that sounds extreme, but that’s what I feel,’ the actress added.
In a rare discussion about her family, Eva Mendes, 50, dished about the two daughters she shares with longtime partner Ryan Gosling and some of the household rules
Mendes (born Eva de la Caridad Méndez) would also share about how she and her partner try to educate their kids on their privileged life, compared to most people in the world, by telling them stories of how they grew up with little money.
‘I explain to them what I didn’t have, what Ryan didn’t have when he was little, how hard we had to fight, the dark days of being paycheck to paycheck, and this and that, but they’ll never really know unless they experience that,’ the Miami, Florida native explained.
After going through bouts of anxiety in her lifetime, Mendes tries to instill self-esteem into their lives by giving them tasks to do around the house to build their confidence.
‘I still have all this anxiety and I see myself passing it on to my children,’ Mendes said, before admitting she herself was a ‘good kid’ growing up in Miami, which she credits her late brother.
‘He’d say, “If I ever see you out there with a guy or smoking, I’ll f**king kick his ass and take you to school every day,”‘ she recalled. ‘By sheer fear I was a good kid.’
During the interview, the retired actress credited Gosling with making her feel ‘sexy’ in her 50s.
‘I feel really f**king sexy at times,’ she gushed. ‘The way my man looks at me is just … at times I’m like, oh my God. That might not sit well with people, but so much of how I feel is a reflection of what he’s giving me.’
The hot and heavy couple first met in August 2011 after they both signed on to star in the epic crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines.

‘I wasn’t thinking about kids before I met her, but after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn’t want to have kids without her,’ the longtime Hollywood leading man told GQ in 2023, before adding. ‘There were moments on The Place Beyond The Pines where we were pretending to be a family, and I didn’t really want it to be pretend anymore.’
The couple went public with their relationship when they went to Disneyland together, and were seen holding hands and walking closely.
Eventually, The couple made their red carpet debut at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote The Place Beyond The Pines in September 2012.
Mesnes has been put promoting her new picture book – Desi, Mami, And The Never-Ending Worries since it dropped on September 17
Mendes went on to kind of retire from acting to focus on their family in 2014, and to be able to do other ventures such as writing her new debut picture book Desi, Mami, And The Never-Ending Worries, which dropped September 17, and includes the actress doing the audio version of the book in her own voice.
The story focuses on a little girl facing endless scary worries, according to Macmillan Publishers.’Every night begins with the same refrain: ‘MAMI! THERE’S A MONSTER UNDER MY BED!’ Desi has so many scary thoughts!
Is her brain a monster?! Of course it’s not a real monster, and Mami assures Desi of this. Sometimes we just have scary worries running through our minds. And like anything in life, you just need to work to make things better.
