Spielberg is Barrymore’s godfather.
He became a parental figure to Barrymore, taking her on trips to Disneyland, letting her stay with him on weekends, and giving her a cat named Gertie.
Barrymore has called Spielberg ‘the only person in my life to this day that ever was a parental figure’.
Drew and Steven looked like close pals as they posed also with Meryl Streep, Debra messing and Whoopi Goldberg.
Barrymore skyrocketed to fame at the age of six after playing the adorable Gertie in the iconic 1982 science fiction movie E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.
In 2022, the actress shared behind-the-scenes photos to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary, including several heartwarming snaps in which she was seen with director Spielberg.
‘Behind The Scenes of E.T. Happy 40th Anniversary❤️,’ Drew wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.
The Golden Globe Award winner beamed as she hugged Steven in one black and white photo.
The two were seen taking a break on set while the young Drew sat on the three-time Academy Award winner’s lap.

Steven was seen leaning over to chat with the child star and sitting closely with her in two other photos.
Drew also included a snap in which she was seen with her on-screen brother Henry Thomas, who played Elliott Taylor.
In the movie, ten-year-old Elliott befriends an alien, who becomes stranded on Earth after his fellow aliens depart in their spaceship without him.

Elliott later introduces the alien, who names himself E.T. for Extra-Terrestrial, to Gertie and his older brother Michael (Robert Macnaughton).
The siblings, along with their mother Mary (Dee Wallace) and Elliott’s friends, later help E.T. escape from the government and return home.
In one photo that Drew shared, she was seen with Henry, Robert, Steven and the E.T. pupper, who was voiced by Pat Welsh. Steven pointed up at the sky while the children and E.T. looked up in wonder.
The Blended performer also shared a snap in which she was seen touching E.T.’s cheek.
She posed a still of the famous scene in which Elliott flies through the sky on his bike with E.T. Drew concluded her post with an image of the movie’s title in blue against a black backdrop.
E.T. was released on June 11, 1982 and became the highest-grossing movie of all time, a record that the movie held for eleven years.
The film received nine Academy Award nominations and won for Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing.
In April, Drew reunited with her on-screen mother Dee, 73, on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. The two shared memories from their time filming the movie and recreated an iconic still from the film which saw Dee holding a young Drew.

Ahead of the film’s 40th anniversary, Drew discussed her close relationship with Steven in an interview with People magazine. She also revealed plans to celebrate the anniversary with the director and her two daughter Frankie, seven, and Olive, nine.
‘I’ve actually been speaking with Steven Spielberg about it,’ she said. ‘He calls my girls who he held when they were babies, and he’s known them throughout their lives.
‘I do want to revel in this moment with them and include them and celebrate with Steven. He’s a big father figure to me.’
Drew told People that Steven pointed out to her that her daughters were around the same age that she was when she appeared in E.T.

‘So he’s like, ‘We’re not missing this moment with your kids,’ Drew said ‘I’m like, ‘Okay. You’re right. We can’t. You’re right.’
She added, ‘This is very emotional and full circle. My kids are very close to the age that I was when E.T. came out. Frankie actually is at the age. She is seven, and she will just be turning eight, and Olive is nine. She’ll be turning ten. This is where I’m at, and they love Steven.’
Over the years, Drew has frequently spoke of her friendship with Steven, who she credits with launching her career.
During a September 2021 appearance on Dax Shepherd’s Armchair Podcast, she said, ‘I got lucky.
She continued, ‘He single-handedly changed my life. He was also someone who I didn’t realize until I was older was also very fatherly.
‘He calls me his first kid. He was appalled by me wearing red lipstick or when I did Playboy. He sent me a note, “Cover up!” ‘
