Universal Credit claimants may be eligible for financial support and discounts worth up to £4,278 during January through a range of national and local schemes.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit provides access to additional help beyond monthly payments, including Council Tax reductions, household grants and energy bill support.

Universal Credit is the Government’s main means-tested benefit for people on low incomes and those who are out of work.

The benefit is also available to people in employment whose earnings fall below a certain threshold.

Eligibility for Universal Credit can unlock a number of other support schemes administered by local authorities, energy providers and Government departments.

Council Tax discount – up to £1,628

Universal Credit claimants may be entitled to a reduction of up to 75 per cent on their Council Tax bill, depending on their local authority’s rules.

The exact level of discount depends on factors including household income, whether the claimant lives alone, the presence of children, and whether anyone in the household has a disability.

For a household living in an average Band D property, a 75 per cent reduction would equate to a saving of approximately £1,628 over the year.

Household Support Fund – up to £500

The fund is financed by the DWP but distributed by local councils, which decide how the money is allocated.

As a result, payment amounts and eligibility criteria vary depending on location.

Some councils provide cash payments, while others issue vouchers for food, energy or essential household items.

Camden Council offers payments of up to £500 to households on low incomes, including those receiving Universal Credit.

Other councils provide support ranging from £50 to £400.

Most local authorities require applicants to be in receipt of Universal Credit, Pension Credit or another low-income benefit, although this is not universal.

Energy bill discounts – £2,000

Several major energy suppliers operate schemes aimed at customers receiving Universal Credit or other means-tested benefits.

British Gas and Octopus Energy both run support programmes for customers experiencing financial difficulty.

The British Gas Energy Trust offers grants through its Individual and Families Fund and the Energy Support Fund.

These schemes can clear between £50 and £2,000 of gas or electricity debt for eligible applicants.

To qualify, applicants must usually have spoken to a money advice agency and must hold the energy debt in their own name at their primary residence.

Other energy suppliers operate similar hardship schemes, with eligibility and award levels varying between providers.

Warm Homes Discount – £150

The scheme provides a £150 credit applied directly to energy bills during the winter months.

Eligibility depends on household circumstances and supplier participation, with applications typically handled by energy providers.

Universal Credit claimants are encouraged to check their local authority website and contact their energy supplier to confirm what support is available

| PA

When combined, the value of Council Tax reductions, Household Support Fund payments, energy debt relief and the Warm Homes Discount can reach £4,278.

The total figure will vary depending on individual circumstances, council policies and energy supplier schemes.

The Government advises claimants to check eligibility requirements for each scheme, as rules and application processes differ.

Some support is awarded automatically, while other schemes require an application to be made directly to the council or supplier.

Funding for local schemes is limited, and some councils close applications once budgets are exhausted.
