The Prince of Wales caught audiences off guard with an unannounced appearance on a special Earthshot Prize edition of The Graham Norton Show, recorded on Thursday evening.
Prince William was joined on the sofa by Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, who serves as an Earthshot Prize Council Member, alongside the Prize’s Global Ambassador Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham, who presented the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony in Singapore.
The one-off episode marks part of the official build-up to this year’s Earthshot Prize ceremony in Mumbai, beginning on November 17.
Singer Jorja Smith also performed during the programme, which was recorded before a studio audience unaware of the royal guest’s involvement.
Mr Norton initially spoke with Ms Blanchett, Mr Irwin and Ms Waddingham about their respective careers before surprising the audience by revealing the thread linking all three guests: The Earthshot Prize.
William then walked onto the set, greeted by cheers and audible gasps from the crowd.
Once seated, the Prince and Mr Norton discussed how the Prize came into being and the importance of combining a sense of urgency with optimism when addressing climate change.
William emphasised that no individual or single initiative could tackle the crisis in isolation, pointing to Earthshot’s role in uniting innovators, investors and advocates worldwide.
Ms Blanchett called the Prize a “tapestry of solutions.” Ms Waddingham praised the way Earthshot connects its finalists with expertise, networks and funding to amplify their work, while Mr Irwin highlighted its power to galvanise younger generations into environmental action.
The special episode serves as a key moment in the countdown to Mumbai, where this year’s ceremony will unfold over three days from November 17.
The event is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants and attract the largest global audience in the Prize’s history.
Viewers worldwide will be able to watch the proceedings on Prime Video, which will stream the ceremony in over 40 languages across 240 countries and territories.
Just last week, William launched the road to this year’s awards by taking part in a cricket match on the Mall alongside some of India’s most celebrated players, a nod to the host nation’s sporting heritage ahead of the Prize’s arrival in Mumbai.
Since its founding in 2020, Earthshot Prize finalists and winners have together avoided or captured over 18 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions, while protecting or restoring 580,000 square kilometres of land, forests and freshwater systems and more than 850,000 square kilometres of ocean and coastline.
The initiative’s participants have also removed, avoided or upcycled 465,000 tonnes of waste, saved or recycled 21 million tonnes of water, and improved air quality for communities representing 600 million people.
The conversation was not entirely focused on environmental matters, however. William also touched on his well-known devotion to Aston Villa and shared his enthusiasm for the films of Christopher Nolan.
Ms Smith rounded out the programme with a musical performance, set to broadcast on BBC One on Friday at 10.40pm.
