One person has died after a vehicle ploughed into the side of a Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton on Friday afternoon.
Footage circulating across social media showed a dark SUV crash through the wall before coming to a stop on the shop floor.
A host of emergency service vehicles, including police, firefighters and ambulance, are currently at the scene of the horror smash in the Finchfield area of the West Midlands city.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police confirmed a man “has sadly died following a fatal RTC in Wolverhampton”.
They said: “We were called to Finchfield Hill shortly before 6pm after a car crashed into a shop front.
“A man in his 30s was sadly pronounced deceased while a number of other people were treated for injuries at the scene.
“The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
“Officers remain at the scene to help Fire and Ambulance colleagues carry out their enquiries.”
The force confirmed the road around the supermarket is “likely to remain closed for some time”, and urged motorists in the area to seek alternative routes.
A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson confirmed four crews were dispatched after they received reports of the crash at 5.51pm.
Police have closed off Finchfield Hill as far north as The Spinney, with Finchfield Road West and Oak Hill also taped off by officers who remain at the scene.
Wolverhampton resident Bonnie Tin, who was inside the supermarket at the time of the collision, posted footage of the scene and has decribed what she witnessed on social media.
She wrote: “What an absolutely terrifying experience today at Lidl. I witnessed a car crash inside the shop, and the panic that followed was horrible.
“There was so much shock and confusion, and it was frightening to see something like that happen right in front of you. You never expect to walk into a shop and experience something so scary.
“My thoughts are with everyone who was there and anyone who may have been hurt. I really hope everyone is okay. I’m glad I’m still alive.”
