British medic killed while volunteering in Ukraine

he sister of a British man killed while volunteering as a medic in Ukraine is fighting to bring his body home to the UK.

Craig Mackintosh was killed in a firefight as he tried to help others in Ukraine on August 24, according to his family’s GoFundMe – set up to repatriate his body.

His family say he was shot as he attempted to get an injured soldier from a vehicle that had been hit.

His sister Lorna said Mr Mackintosh from Thetford, Norfolk, had lost his life “in the line of duty”.

“Please help us bring this war hero home,” Ms Mackintosh said.

“Our brother bravely volunteered to go to (Ukraine) as a medic to help save lives in this war torn country.

“In the line of duty, helping others he lost his life. This selfless man is currently stranded in a morgue in Ukraine and there is no help to get him home.”

She said it would cost around £4,000 to bring his body back to the UK.

“We have spoken to an international funeral provider and it’s going to cost around £4,000 to have him repatriated back to the UK.

“He gave his life to save others and he needs to come back home to have the service he deserves. A true hero’s service surrounded by his family and friends. Please, please help to bring our hero home.”

As of Thursday, the GoFundMe had exceeded its target, raising £5,500.

Another family member wrote on Facebook: “Because he was there in the capacity of a volunteer the foreign office won’t fund bringing him home and we have to self fund his repatriation.

“Today we heard he died while attempting to get to the injured from a vehicle that had been hit. He put himself in obvious danger to help others. Craig deserves to be bought home and given a service to honour his efforts.”

His daughter Kiya added: “Bring my dad home and lay him to rest in the place he deserves, in the way he deserves.”

An FCDO Spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Ukraine and are in contact with the local authorities.”
