Thomas Markle Sr’s late wife has been revealed to be the author of a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police accusing him of alleged sex crimes.
On Saturday, Scotland Yard confirmed it received a January 2019 letter containing the claims against Meghan Markle’s estranged father.
It comes after Thomas Sr, 82, was accused of allegedly possessing a collection of child sexual abuse imagery while living in the Philippines.
Philippine authorities have confirmed they are investigating the claims after the Duchess of Sussex’s half-brother, Thomas Jr, said he had found the alleged stash.
Thomas Sr has strenuously denied all allegations.
The Duchess said on Friday she was shown a letter containing “disturbing allegations” about her father in 2018, with her spokesman later clarifying the Met’s 2019 timing was correct.
Roslyn Loveless, who was married to Thomas Markle from 1964 to 1975, has now been identified as the letter’s author, according to multiple reports.
The woman, who died in 2024, was the mother of the Duchess’s half-siblings, Samatha and Thomas Jr.
She divorced Thomas Markle in 1975, four years before he married Doria Ragland, the Duchess’s mother, in 1979.
Meghan was born in 1981, the only daughter of Thomas Sr and Miss Ragland.
In a statement on the 2019 letter released on Saturday, the Met said: “Following a thorough review of Met Police systems and records, we have confirmed that in January 2019, we received a letter containing a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom.
“It was sent to the MPS Protection Command to raise concerns in relation to the security of the Duchess of Sussex.
“The letter was reviewed, and a decision was made that it should be passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness. The details of the allegations in the letter were not shared with other law enforcement agencies.”
The MPS is reviewing the handling of this matter in 2019 and considering whether a referral to the IOPC is necessary to review our approach.”
The force is not currently investigating the claims against Thomas Sr and has not investigated them previously.
The Met declined to comment further when approached by GB News.
Meghan initially said she was shown the letter that made the “troubling” allegations against her father in 2018 and was assured the force was investigating them.
Regarding the apparent timeline mix-up, the Duchess’s spokesman said: “In recalling events from more than seven years ago, without the benefit of a diary entry or contemporaneous record, it is understandable that she may have been mistaken by a few months.
“If the MPS holds a time-stamped record confirming that the letter was reviewed in 2019, that should be treated as the accurate reference point for when it was received and shared with the Duchess.
“I think it is reasonable to recognise that she is doing her best to recall the precise timing of events that were not diarised at the time, and that any discrepancy of a few months is an understandable consequence of that passage of time.”
In his interview with the Daily Mail, Thomas Sr said: “I’m shocked, I’m hurt and I’m very upset that my son is making these accusations against me. I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.
“This is bulls***. It’s just a bunch of lies. It’s sick. I have no idea why Tom is trying to destroy me with these lies.”
The FBI said in a statement: “The FBI is aware of the allegations and will provide support, as appropriate, to the Philippine authorities.
“We will also investigate any related allegations of federal violations of US law.”
The People’s Channel has approached the Duchess and Thomas Sr for comment.
