Potter was appointed last week but had to wait until Wednesday night to make his bow as boss, following weekend Premier League postponements.
Not only was the visit of Salzburg the manager’s first game as Blues boss, but also the first Champions League match he had attended as fan or coach.
It proved a frustrating experience for Potter and his players, who eventually went ahead through Raheem Sterling only to be pegged back by Noah Okafor’s goal in the 75th minute.
Tweeting on full-time, RB Salzburg’s English-language Twitter account posted: “Did what Voldemort couldn’t and got a result against Potter.”
Referencing Harry Potter, the result kept Salzburg above Chelsea in Group E.
The Blues will now face table-topping AC Milan in back-to-back games which will go a long way to settle the final standings.
