Everton vs Liverpool: Merseyside derby preview

Jurgen Klopp’s side overcame a stubborn Newcastle on Wednesday and could perhaps use the late euphoria of that win to really set their season alight, all at the expense of their rivals no less.

Such are the standards set by Manchester City, the number of dropped points already will be of huge concern to Klopp, albeit with the caveat that this still an embryonic stage of the new season.

Liverpool boast a fantastic record in Merseyside derbies of late and could pile more misery on Frank Lampard, whose Everton side remain winless in the Premier League thus far after three successive draws.

Everton vs Liverpool team news

With Anthony Gordon staying at Everton despite interest from Chelsea, the England Under-21 international seems all but certain to lead the line for the home side. Neal Maupay, meanwhile, could make his debut for the club along with fellow new faces Idrissa Gueye and James Garner.

Yerry Mina, Andros Townsend, Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure are all out injured.

For Liverpool, Darwin Nunez should return having served his three-match suspension. Jordan Henderson, however, will miss out having picked up a hamstring injury in the win over Newcastle.

Diogo Jota could make his return to the squad after returning to training, although new signing Arthur Melo has not yet had his international clearance.
