England captain Williamson ruled out of USA friendly as injuries mount

ngland Women have suffered a blow ahead of their friendly against world champions the USA on Friday after captain Leah Williamson was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury.

West Ham defender Lucy Parker has also picked up an injury and as a result will miss out on the chance to make her senior Lionesses debut this week.

Parker and Williamson’s withdrawals come off the back of striker Alessia Russo also pulling out of the squad yesterday due to a small injury.

England have duly called up Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy and Manchester United forward Nikita Parris as replacements.

The absence of Williamson is a particular blow to manager Sarina Wiegman, whose European champions will face the USA in front of a sell-out crowd at Wembley Stadium on Friday night before taking on the Czech Republic in another friendly in Brighton on Tuesday.

The defender is understood to have picked up an injury in training and she will now return to Arsenal for assessment.
