ntonio Conte believes Tottenham will truly feel the benefits of their summer spending over the next month, as the intensity of the fixture schedule ramps up.
Spurs spent around £120million on new signings in the summer and got their business done early to back Conte.
The Italian, however, has so far been slow to integrate some of his new recruits, with the likes of Yves Bissouma restricted to just one start.
Conte has, though, shown faith in summer signings Ivan Perisic and Richarlison, and he believes that others — such as wing-back Djed Spence and academy product Oliver Skipp, whose chances have been restricted after a long-term injury — will have a vital role to play as after this month’s international break Spurs have 13 games in 42 days.
“When you have the possibility to work, to have more time, especially with new players, you can bring all the players into our idea of football,” said Conte. “In this first part of the season I wanted to play with the old players because they knew very well which is our idea of football.
“But now I think we are doing the good step with Richy, with Clement [Lenglet] and with Ivan Perisic. With Bissouma, we are trying to accelerate this process, but when you arrive in a team well organised with an idea of football, you need a bit of time to go into this idea of football.
“But in the next 13 games I have at least three players that I can count on much more in the way than I did in these seven games.”
Bissouma was signed for £25m from Brighton in the summer but he has struggled to make an impact at the club so far. Conte has explained how the 22-year-old is still getting to grips with his system — not uncommon for midfielders playing under the Italian.
Cesc Fabregas and Christian Eriksen both struggled at first under Conte, at Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively, but they eventually became key players for him when given time.
“They are two different situations, because in my past in England, when we played with this system, we played with two midfielders — like N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic,” said Conte.
“Strong midfielders with good quality, good stamina, good physically. When I played with three midfielders, for sure, I need a pivot who is more good with the ball, more quality, less strong physically.
“Two players [like this], for example at Inter Milan, I had Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolo Barella, players with different characteristics. When you go to play with three strikers, you need to have two midfielders to have quality and be strong physically.
“I think that for this reason we have these type of players. I am really happy because I am seeing a lot of improvement in my midfielders.”
Tottenham take on Leicester tomorrow and they go into the game off the back of their first loss of the season, having lost 2-0 to Sporting in the Champions League, with the Portuguese side scoring both their goals late on.
“We have to try in every game to get a win,” said Conte. “This has to be our reality and, for this reason, you have to understand that when we lose, we are totally in the opposite side. And for this reason we have to feel, we have to be a bit angry and to try and have a good reaction.”
