Chelsea vs AC Milan: Champions League preview

Ahead of the first of two games between Group E’s biggest teams, the Blues are still looking for their first win while Milan are juggling a host of injuries in their squad.

Graham Potter’s first game in charge was a frustrating draw with RB Salzburg, so victory on Wednesday would lay down a welcome – and much-needed points-wise – early marker in his tenure.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Chelsea vs AC Milan is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.

Stamford Bridge will host the match.

Chelsea vs AC Milan team news

Chelsea are again expected to be without goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and midfielder N’Golo Kante, with the pair struggling with knee and thigh injuries respectively.

Marc Cucurella is hopeful of overcoming illness to make the squad, and Carney Chukwuemeka could join him. There remain doubts over Jorginho’s fitness.

AC Milan are struggling with what Italian media are describing as an “injury crisis” and may have to turn to youngsters to make up a full squad.

Mike Maignan, Junior Messias, Theo Hernandez, Divock Origi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alessandro Florenzi have already been ruled out, and Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemaekers could join them on the sidelines. Former Blues forward Olivier Giroud should feature.
