Eleanor Hague, 16, died in Monday’s crash in North Yorkshire

A teenage student who died in a crash involving a minibus and a car in North Yorkshire has been named.

Eleanor Hague, a 16-year-old sixth form pupil at Tadcaster Grammar School, died when the minibus she was a passenger in collided with a Hyundai i10 in Toulston Lane on Monday.

North Yorkshire Police said there were eight other passengers aged 16 to 18 on the bus, one of whom suffered serious injuries, as well as the driver.

In a statement Tadcaster Grammar School said they were “deeply saddened” by “the tragic loss”, adding that their thoughts were with “everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy”.

The force said the passengers on the bus were all students at Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School, who have a shared sixth form.

Eleanor – known as Ellie – was from Sherburn in Elmet, police said, adding that her family were being supported by specialist officers.

Another teenage girl who was injured in the crash was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, though police said they were not believed to be life-threatening.

The other passengers, and the man driving the minibus, received treatment at hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the car, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested following the crash on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving but has since been released on police bail.

The school statement went on to say: “We are totally committed to providing every member of our school community with unwavering support and empathy as we come together as one.

“Appropriate support will be available on site tomorrow, with school open to all students and staff.”

The school was closed on Tuesday as the site was not deemed safe for students but is expected to reopen on Wednesday.

In a joint statement, David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, and Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the incident on Toulston Lane, Tadcaster and the tragic death of a teenage girl.

“Our condolences go to her family, friends and the whole Tadcaster community, who we know will be pulling together at this incredibly difficult time.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant footage of what happened is asked to contact police.
