Downing Street has confirmed Sir Keir Starmer will attend Prince William’s Earthshot Prize next month.

The Prime Minister will travel to Brazil for both an environmental awards ceremony and a major climate conference.

Sir Keir Starmer is set to join the Prince of Wales at the 2025 Earthshot Prize event in Rio de Janeiro.

Following the ceremony for the global environmental award established by the royal, the Prime Minister will proceed to Belem in northern Brazil.

The city, located near the Amazon river’s mouth, will host the Cop30 international climate summit where Sir Keir will represent the UK.

Downing Street’s confirmation of the trip last week came after earlier suggestions that Sir Keir might not make the journey to Brazil.

The Liberal Democrats had accused him of “hypocrisy” over this stance.

Their criticism stemmed from Sir Keir’s own comments about Rishi Sunak when it emerged in 2022 that the then-Prime Minister might miss that year’s summit.

Mr Sunak ultimately did attend the Egypt conference, as well as the subsequent gathering in the United Arab Emirates.

The Prime Minister’s spokesperson stated that the Brazil visit forms part of plans to re-establish Britain as “a global leader for climate action and green growth”.

Officials emphasised that net zero represents “the economic opportunity of the 21st century” with potential to “create good jobs for the future”.

Sir Keir previously attended the Cop29 gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan last year.

The yearly Cop conferences unite countries that have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to coordinate responses to global warming.

Singers Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes are confirmed to attend the awards ceremony on November 5.

Hollywood A-lister Matthew McConaughey has also voiced the official trailer for the event.

Additionally, Brazilian supermodel and environmental campaigner Gisele Bündchen has become the inaugural Brazilian representative on The Earthshot Prize Council.
