Sainsbury’s has sparked controversy over its new festive snack after labelling chicken treats as ‘gingerbread shaped people’ rather than the traditional ‘gingerbread men’.
The supermarket chain has faced criticism on social media, with numerous shoppers accusing the retailer of being ‘woke’ over its choice of wording.
The description appears on packaging for the retailer’s new party food product – a breadcrumb-coated chicken snack shaped like traditional gingerbread figures.
Hundreds of customers have shared their views on the naming convention after images of the product emerged on Facebook.

The chicken snacks, priced at £3.50 for a pack of eight, are currently available in Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.
The product is also part of a 3 for 2 deal for Nectar card holders.
According to Sainsbury’s description, the festive treat consists of ‘chicken seasoned, formed and shaped, coated in golden breadcrumbs with tomato ketchup for decorating’.
Despite their gingerbread-inspired appearance, the snacks contain no actual gingerbread flavouring.

“Sainsburys, give your head a wobble,” wrote one social media user in response to the naming choice.
Another critic commented: “Gingerbread man, not people, the world has gone mad.”
“They will always be gingerbread men,” insisted a third shopper on the Facebook post.
The backlash has seen numerous customers telling the supermarket chain to “stop with the woke” over its choice of terminology.
The criticism emerged after photos of the product packaging were shared on a Facebook page dedicated to new food products. However, not all shoppers took issue with the naming convention.
“Gotta love people throwing their toys out their prams because of a word change,” commented one Facebook user.
Some customers pointed out a different concern altogether – questioning the logic behind the product’s description.
“So – it says gingerbread shaped people, should it not say gingerbread people shaped chicken,” noted one shopper.
