An investigation has been launched after an inmate died while in custody at a private prison.
Jake O’Brien was found dead on Tuesday while he was being held at HMP Forest Bank, a category-B facility in Salford.
His death has triggered an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Adrian Usher.
He said the watchdog would look into the events leading up to the prisoner death and publish a final report once an inquest has been concluded.
Meanwhile a spokeswoman for the jail, which is run by French prison operator Sodexo, confirmed the investigation had been launched, “as with all deaths in custody”.
She said the prison was unable to comment further while the probe takes place, but added that “our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this time”.
Mr Usher also passed on his condolences to O’Brien’s family and friends.
