A police officer is being treated in hospital after being shot in Nottingham city centre last night.
The officer approached two suspects in Angel Row shortly before 4.50am last night, Nottinghamshire Police said.
He is currently being treated in hospital for a wound to his foot.
The force said a firearm has been recovered.
Two suspects, a man and a woman, fled the scene and remain outstanding.
Angel Row is closed off this morning, with a large police presence remaining in place.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by officers as they work to protect and serve the public.
“As we investigate what happened and work to apprehend the individuals involved, my thoughts today are with the injured officer, his family and colleagues.
“I also ask that anyone with additional information shares this with us without delay. Even the smallest bit of information could make all the difference to this investigation.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 106 of October 18, 2026.
Curtis Jackson, a 22-year-old walking home from a night shift in the nearby area, told the Nottingham Post: “My thoughts go out to the police officer, this is really a terrible incident.
“It’s a scary thought that on a Saturday night, when most people go out to have a fun night, someone was in town with a gun ready to use it.
“I’ve only moved to the UK from the USA recently, and also witnessed the fire the other week. I must say I feel quite worried to be in the city at night.”
Meanwhile, a resident in a nearby building told the newspaper: “I was woken up by a lot of commotion around 5am.
“Living here, this is nothing unusual, so I didn’t think much of it at first.
“It does worry me that the suspects are still on the run, and I hope the police can find them as soon as possible.
“I hope the officer can recover soon. He was only doing his job and should never be subject to this kind of violence.”
Another local told the outlet that she “doesn’t feel safe in the city” and “scary incidents like this are becoming all too common nowadays.”
