A patriotic Briton has declared he will “drag his feet” if the council ask him to remove his display after painting a Union Jack onto the entire front facade of his house.

Speaking to GB News, Simon Brocklehurst from Sutton-in-Ashfield joked “they can’t tear that down” after being called a “racist” for his previous display of the flag.

Mr Brocklehurst’s initial display of a flag was targeted by a local who tore it down, which inspired him to transform his home instead.

Speaking to GB News National Reporter Will Godley, he explained: “My granddad fought in the war, and I’ve always flown the flag as a sign of respect and a sign of hope.

“Somebody decided to rip it down and run down the street with it, shouting ‘racist’, so I thought, I’m going to paint my house. They can’t rip that one down!”

Revealing the reaction he’s had to his house both in person and online, Mr Brocklehurst claimed that he has had “mixed reaction”, describing himself as “public enemy number one” online.

He said: “Only online, there’s a lot of vile keyboard warriors saying, ‘I’m going to break your windows’, I’m going to do this, I’m going to do that.

“It’s just keyboard warriors trying to put a downer on things. In real life, everybody loves it.”

Having witnessed Mr Brocklehurst be called a “racist” from a car passing by, Will asked him if he believes the comments and accusations that he is “far-right” are fair.

Disagreeing with Will, he responded: “No. Like I say, everybody’s entitled to their opinion. I class things as far-right, far-left and in the middle, and I do class myself as in the middle.

“It’s just at the minute, if you decide to fly a flag, you’re automatically classed as far-right, and I don’t understand that at all.”

Defending his patriotic display further, Mr Brocklehurst told GB News that his family and locals do enjoy it, despite some negative reactions.

He stated: “My family likes it, and like I say, most people in Sutton like it. I’ve had a couple of negative comments, but nothing major. I’m not racist at all”.

Asked by Will if he would remove the paintwork if Derby Council asked him to, Mr Brocklehurst remained defiant, admitting he would “drag his feet”.

He concluded: “Well, if they came and told me to repaint the house, I mean, if it’s law, I suppose I’d have to do it.

“But I’d drag my feet all the way and keep it on as long as possible.”
