Two people have been arrested after concerns were raised about a two-year-old girl who later died in hospital.

Cleveland Police were called to Hartington Close in Thornaby, on Teesside, at about 16:20 BST on Saturday after the concerns about the child were reported.

The girl was then taken from the area to hospital where she passed away.

Officers have arrested a 25-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man in connection with the child’s death after launching an investigation into the death, which they said is “currently being treated as unexplained”.

The pair are currently being held for questioning, a Cleveland Police spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the child during this very difficult time,” a statement added.

Crime scene investigators were still on Hartington Close on Sunday.
