A fierce row has broken out on a quiet London street after TV crews turned it into the set of the new Harry Potter series “without asking residents”.

Springfield Gardens in Upminster has been used to film the set of Privet Drive, where a young Harry Potter grows up.

However, local residents have claimed they were not properly consulted before filming for the HBO series began in June.

Though letters were placed through the doors of the properties, some locals have said they were not made aware what exactly was being filmed – and now, some worry fans will take over the street.

Katie Perry, 42, said: “We just saw some cameras outside, they never said what it was for.

“It is such a massive franchise to we are shocked that nobody told us.

“Now we are one some Harry Potter Facebook page with our number plate in the picture.”

It is understood that drones were used to film the street, which features 1930s semi-detached houses in a mock Tudor style.

Describing the moment when they found out their road would feature in the new series, Mrs Perry added: “My kids were jumping around going crazy. It is exciting.

“I just hope that it will make our house price go up… We didn’t get any compensation for it.”

Mrs Perry continued: “We are going to get bombarded with wizards. The kids are saying that we should sell Harry Potter merchandise outside the house.”

But her husband, Wayne, fears for the safety of his children.

He said: “Since the news broke, we have already had a lot of people standing outside the house taking photos.

“We don’t know what it means for us in the future.

“The fact that we have already had people outside after dark when we have two young kids is very strange.”

Privet Drive is described in the books as a “middle-class street” and “the very last place you would expect astonishing things to happen”.

The new series is set to feature Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Dominic McLaughlin as the title character.
