A murder investigation has been launched after a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the incident in Cheetham Hill.

Police were called at about 14:25 BST to Cardinal Street on Thursday to reports a 26-year-old man had suffered serious injuries.

Officers tried to resuscitate him and he was taken to hospital but later died, Greater Manchester Police said.

The 19-year-old has been held in custody for questioning, the force added.

Det Ch Insp Andy Naismith said: “We are still very early in our investigation, and work is still ongoing as we establish the full circumstances following yesterday’s incident.

“You can expect to see an increased police presence over the coming days, and I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to an officer.”

The 26-year-old man’s family have been informed of his death and are being supported by specialist police officers.

Det Ch Insp Naismith said the stabbing would “understandably” cause worry in the local community, but he wanted to reassure residents that “considerable resources” would be put into the investigation.
