Spandau Ballet musician Martin Kemp was taken to hospital after suffering injuries to his fingers in a chainsaw incident at his home.

The 64-year-old performer sustained the wounds whilst attempting to remove a tree branch from his property.

The accident occurred when Mr Kemp mishandled the power tool, resulting in significant damage to his hand that required immediate medical attention.

Emergency treatment included extensive bandaging of his fingers and administration of a tetanus injection.

The incident came to light when his radio presenter son, Roman Kemp, discussed the mishap during an episode of the You About podcast, where he revealed details of his father’s accident to co-host Tom Grennan.

Roman disclosed the alarming details after receiving a disturbing photograph via the family’s WhatsApp group on Friday evening.

The image showed his father’s heavily bandaged fingers accompanied by a brief message reading “yep… chainsaw”.

The radio personality recounted on the You About podcast how he discovered the accident after finishing work. “It’s scary. Friday night, I’d just finished work and looked at my phone, and dad sent a picture of his hand with all fingers heavily strapped up,” Roman told co-host Tom Grennan.

Both Roman and his sister Harley attempted to contact their father for clarification, but received no immediate response.

The accident unfolded when Mr Kemp attempted to handle the chainsaw without its protective sheath in place.

According to Roman’s account on the podcast, his father made the critical error of grasping the tool by its blade rather than the handle.

“Do you know what he said? ‘I picked it up from the blade, and it didn’t have the sheath on it’. He said it switched on…he’s picked it up and it’s kicked into gear,” Roman explained during the podcast discussion.

The sudden activation of the chainsaw resulted in immediate injury, with Roman describing how his father “screamed” from the pain.

The incident led to significant bleeding, with blood spilling as Mr Kemp collided with his wife Shirlie in the aftermath of the accident.

Roman expressed concern about his father’s decision to operate the dangerous equipment himself, suggesting the musician should have employed a professional for the task.

“He’s 65. He’s got more than enough dough. Get a professional in, you can’t be doing that,” The One Show star stated during the podcast.

The radio presenter added that his father was “lucky not to lose his hand” and noting he knew someone who had lost a finger in a similar incident.

When Mr Grennan joked that Mr Kemp’swife wouldn’t be pleased if the injury prevented him from playing guitar, Roman responded with humour: “Yeah, because he wouldn’t be able to play guitar, exactly.”
