Network RailTrain travel from Glasgow Central station has been severely disrupted after damage to overhead electricity lines.
Services have been cancelled and delayed in the south of Glasgow, to Paisley and Ayrshire and on cross-border routes to London, Liverpool and Manchester.
Network Rail told commuters to expect “major disruption” until the end of the day while it worked to move a train from below the damaged lines.
ScotRail services from Ardrossan Harbour, Ayr, and Largs have also been affected by another overhead wire fault further down the line at Glengarnock, near Dalry in Ayrshire.
Network RailScotRail said no passengers were on the train when electric wires were damaged near Glasgow Central’s high level platforms.
Services via Glasgow Central low-level are not affected.
Phil Campbell, ScotRail’s customer operations director, said: “We’re sorry to customers who have experienced disruption to their journey today as a result of this incident, and we share their frustration when these things happen.
“Network Rail engineers are working hard to repair damage to the overhead wires.”
He said anyone delayed by 30 minutes or more could claim compensation through the Delay Repay Guarantee via the ScotRail website or app.
Network RailPassengers with ScotRail tickets can also use them at no extra cost on any alternative route to their destination, or on McGills or Stagecoach buses. They can also be used on JMB Travel route 41 between Motherwell and Lanark.
Following the fault near Dalry, Network Rail said some trains between Kilwinning and Ayr were running but urged passengers to check with train operators for the latest information.
Updates will be available on the National Rail website.
