Labour MP Jeevun Sandher has called for the removal of “weird and tatty” Union Jacks and St George’s Crosses, which he claims are making “people feel uneasy”.

Mr Sandher shared on the social media platform TikTok his thoughts, saying he is going to ask the local Reform council to remove the flags.

The MP for Loughborough said: “It’s time to take down the lamppost flags… there are flags hanging from almost every single lamppost.

“Now look, I love our flag. My wife wore that flag when she served in the British Army. I see flags flying proudly from flagpoles, from public buildings.

“I see it where the England football team plays, and I don’t think about those flags very much, actually, they’re just there, it’s quite nice.

“And yet here I am with flags flying from almost every single lamppost, getting a bit tatty, the cable ties are coming loose, they could blow off in the wind.”

Mr Sandher described the painting of roundabouts with St George’s Crosses as “a bit weird”.

He said that from what he has seen online and messages in his inbox, the flags are making “people feel uneasy”.

The MP said it is ‘not the British way’ to use the flags as a tool of division

Mr Sandher questioned about the message behind the flags and what they are supposed to be sending.

He continued: “Look, I’ll take people at their word. People who say, this is about national pride.

“I’m proud of my country too, and I’m proud of our flag. But I do understand why others feel that it’s about excluding people.

“Why others feel that it’s about saying who belongs here and who doesn’t.”

The Labour MP pushed the message that “we’re one British people” and “should be standing together underneath our flag, not some of us looking up with unease”.

Mr Sandher explained that he feels it is “not the British way” and people should be “standing together, not standing apart”.

He added: “That’s what being British is about. Unity, decency, determination. Having a pint, a cup of tea, supporting the English football team and sometimes they win.

“That’s what being British is about.”

The Loughborough MP concluded his message say he will ask the local Reform County Council to take down the flags from the lampposts.

He said: “They [Reform] have said it is illegal. It is also a safety hazard. It’s time to take down the lamppost flags.”

Mr Sandher previously called out the Unite the Kingdom protest, saying “violence on our streets is completely unacceptable”.

He called for the nation to “stand together” and dismiss those who “seek to divide us”.
