The broadcast icon, 67, sported a swelling bruise to the right side of her head in the candid snap as she sported a Stand Up To Cancer shirt.
She captioned the snap: ‘When you hit yourself in the head with a pickleball paddle’.
The star looked to have made a recovery later on as she posed in a Christmas skirt, saying she was ‘ready to rock around the Christmas tree now.’
Couric’s shirt choice was poignant as January 2025 will mark the 27th anniversary of the death of her first husband John ‘Jay’ Monaghan, who died aged just 42 from colon cancer.
The couple welcomed two daughters during their nine year marriage, Ellie, 33, and Carrie, 28.

Ellie welcomed her first child in March 2024, a son named John in honor of his late grandfather.
Katie wrote about her daughter and son-in-law: ‘Mom and Dad (Ellie and Mark) are over the moon (it was a full moon).’
She said about herself, ‘I am thrilled to have my first grandchild,’ and she noted about her younger daughter Carrie that she ‘can’t wait to be a cool Aunt.’
Finally, she said about her 61-year-old financier husband John Molner: ‘[He] is enjoying handing out cigars.’
Speaking on behalf of her family, she added, ‘We feel so blessed.’
To close out the caption, the longtime television host wrote, ‘We’ll have more tomorrow in Wake-Up Call.’
Couric made sure to show her appreciation for hospital staff as she wrote across a photo of her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson: ‘Thank you to the wonderful nurses at @providencecalifornia.’
Ellie tied the knot with husband Mark on July 4, 2021.
