First Minister John Swinney and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown have hailed the Scottish national team after they defeated Denmark 4-2 at Hampden Park in a winner-takes-all game.
It means the Tartan Army have qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America, ending a 28-year absence from the competition.
Swinney, the SNP’s leader, wrote on X: “Fabulously well done. Such a joy to watch such an amazing, spirited performance. Respect”
He reposted a post from the official Scottish football page, celebrating the result.
The leader of the Scottish Labour Party, Anas Sarwar, also commented on the historic victory.
She added: “Congratulations Scotland! We are going to the World Cup!”
Gordon Brown, the former Labour PM, commented: “Congratulations to the @ScotlandNT team and Steve Clarke for taking us through to the World Cup finals.
“I have been in Spain 1982, Italy 1990, and France 1998. Looking forward to cheering the team on in North America in 2026.”

Andy Murray also celebrated the win online, writing: “Yessssssssssssssssssss! Never in doubt Scotland, north America here we come.”
The Scottish tennis legend was among those who reacted to Scott McTominay’s extraordinary opening goal.
He stated: “What on earth was that? Mctominay, you wee dancer!”
The goal gave Scotland the lead against the Danes within three minutes.

After a controversial red card for Rasumus Kristensen, Scotland grabbed the lead again by an inswinging corner from Lewis Ferguson, which was whipped into the six-yard box and into the opposition’s net.
Lawrence Shankland got ahead of Kasper Schmeichel to get the slightest of touches.
Scotland then failed to clear a Gustav Isaksen’s cross, which eventually fell to Patrick Dorgu, who calmly scored with a left-foot finish from 10 yards.

Kieran Tierney scored the winner before the game was wrapped up with a Kenny McLean 50-yard chip from inside his own half.
The result meant Scotland finished top of Group C.
This will be their first World Cup appearance since 1998.
Meanwhile, Denmark head into Thursday’s play-off draw to discover their fate.
