A massive building fire which shut a major freeway in Melbourne is being treated as suspicious by police.
Emergency services were called to out-of-control blaze at Kennards Self Storage in Port Melbourne, around 8.35pm.
It appeared to shut the nearby Westgate Freeway in an eastbound direction as firefighters battled the flames for over an hour.
Footage shared on social media shows out-of-control flames tearing through the storage facility, as nearby trees are engulfed and a huge plume of black smoke hangs over the city.
Victoria Police revealed on Saturday night that the blaze is being treated as suspicious.
‘Anyone who witnessed anything or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au,’ Victoria Police said.
The VicEmergency website showed that at least nine crews attended the fire.
‘Firefighters arrived on scene within six minutes to find a grass fire that had spread to a nearby building,’ a spokesperson for Fire Rescue Victoria said.
‘Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, escalated the response and quickly contained the grass fire.

‘The structure fire was contained to external damage.
‘Firefighters searched the affected structure for occupants and fire extension.
‘No injuries have been reported. This incident was deemed Under Control at 9.47pm.’
‘Firefighters remain on scene to cool and ventilate the structure.’
