Drivers are being warned of new rules being introduced today, which could see drivers have their costs hiked if they operate petrol, diesel or electric vehicles.

HMRC will be rolling out the new advisory fuel rates today (Monday, September 1, 2025) as part of fresh updates introduced every quarter.

The AFRs are used for employees who use a company car if they need to be reimbursed for business travel or if they need to repay the cost of fuel used for private travel.

Rates are in place for petrol, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas and electric vehicles, with a new rate introduced for the first time in the September 1 update, specifically for EV owners who use public or home chargers.

In the last week, HMRC was forced into a U-turn after it published the wrong AFRs for electric car drivers who are paying per mile when using a public charger.

Figures published originally stated that electric vehicle owners would be reimbursed 12p for using a public charger, although this has since been changed to 14p.

HMRC calculated the electricity cost per kilowatt-hour, 51p, which should be weighted against car sales at a rate of 3.59, with a spokesperson apologising for “any confusion caused”.

To help drivers prepare for the new changes, GB News has compiled a full list of new HMRC advisory fuel rates and how they have changed in the latest update.

Advisory fuel rates per mile from September 1, 2025

Petrol

Engines up to 1,400cc – Remains at 12 pence

Between 1,401cc and 2,000cc – Reduced to 14 pence

Over 2,000cc – Reduced to 22 pence

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Diesel

Engines up to 1,600cc – Raised to 12 pence

Between 1,601cc and 2,000cc – Remains at 13 pence

Over 2,000cc – Raised to 18 pence

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

Engines up to 1,400cc – Remains at 11 pence

Between 1,401cc and 2,000cc – Remains at 13 pence

Over 2,000cc – Remains at 21 pence

Electric

Home charger – 8 pence

Public charger – 14 pence

With the introduction of the new rates for electric vehicles, data is taken from public charging price data from the Zapmap Price Index.

At present, slow and fast chargers are priced at 52 pence per kilowatt hour, while rapid and ultra-rapid chargers, which are rated as more than 50kW, are priced at 76p/kWh.

The latest petrol and diesel prices are taken from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), while LPG prices are from the Automobile Association.

For the sake of these advisory fuel rates, hybrid vehicles are treated as either petrol or diesel, depending on the powertrain included in the vehicle.
