An 11-year-old girl has died in unexplained circumstances after falling ill in Helensburgh.

Police confirmed an investigation has been launched into the death of the girl, who attended Hermitage Academy.

She had been taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow on Sunday and died the following day.

A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Council said it was offering support to family and friends, and that it was devastated by the news.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the death was being treated as unexplained and inquiries were ongoing.

They said: “Around 11:40 on Monday 17 November we received a report of an 11-year-old girl taken unwell in the Helensburgh area.

“She had been taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow on Sunday 16 November, and died on Monday 17 November.”

An Argyll and Bute Council spokesperson said: “We are devastated to hear about the death of one of our pupils who attended Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh.

“Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this awful time. We are providing ongoing support to their family along with staff and pupils at the school.”
