Tilda Swinton wore her former lover’s artwork to The Fashion Awards

Perhaps the most sophisticated look on The Fashion Awards red carpet, which played out last night at The Royal Albert Hall, was worn by Tilda Swinton.

Revealed in two parts, the celebrated actor posed in a printed overcoat with tartan collar before removing it to reveal a cloud swirling, blue silk gown. Both garments featured the artwork of her former lover, the Scottish artist John Byrne, with whom she has two children – Honor and Xavier Swinton Byrne.

The look was designed by London-based label Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, and is a preview to the upcoming Autumn Winter 2023 collection which will be shown in Milan on January 15, the Scottish designer tells us.

“Titled Engine Room, one of the collection’s main elements is the collaboration with artist John Byrne, the father of Tilda’s children and someone we’ve already been inspired by in the past,” Jeffrey says. “It is amazing to actually be able to work with his prints.” Byrne studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1958 to 1963, and has also found success writing plays including The Slab Boys Trilogy, which explores working-class life in Scotland.

“It really solidified a relationship I’d already been fostering with Tilda, and has brought us closer together,” he continues, the day after taking to the red carpet by her side. “It made so much sense to us to use this moment, The Fashion Awards, to preview the collection, celebrate John’s work and give people a bit of a taste of what’s to come from us.”

Swinton had more than just the carpet to tackle during the evening. During the ceremony, she took to the main stage to present Jefferson Hack, co-founder of Dazed Media and father to Lila Moss, with the Special Recognition Award for Cultural Curation.

During a gushing speech, she said: “When I picture the culture of not only this country but an intergalactic span without the wisdom, perspective and vision of Jefferson, all systems crash. It’s simply not imaginable.”

The pair continued their night at Jefferson’s blow-out after party, hosted by the actor and Moss at Mayfair member’s club The Twenty Two.
